Lavender has been used for centuries with its list of benefits well-documented. Believed to originate from the Mediterranean, Middle East, and India over 2,500 years ago, this flowering plant is known not only for its beauty, but also for its sweet floral fragrance.
Deriving its name from the Latin ‘lavare’ meaning ‘to wash’, this herb is grown in Northern Africa and the Mediterranean mountains, often for the extraction of essential oils.
Lavender, in its most common form, is available in aromatherapy oils, bath gels, extracts, infusions, lotions, soaps, teas, tinctures, and whole dried flowers.
The Egyptians used lavender in their perfumes and massage oils, while the Greeks used lavender for its medicinal properties during the first century AD, and the Romans believed that lavender restored vitality by infusing its scent in their baths.
According to research, lavender oil is believed to be beneficial in a variety of conditions including:
- Postoperative pain
Lavender is being studied for its antibacterial and antiviral properties and it is often used in other forms of integrative medicine such as massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic manipulation.
Lavender and Insomnia
Folklore suggests that pillows were filled with lavender flowers to help restless people fall asleep. Scientific evidence has further inclined that aromatherapy (with lavender) may slow the activity of the nervous system, which improves sleep quality, promotes relaxation, and lifts moods in people who suffer from sleep disorders.
Recent studies have suggested that a massage (coupled with lavender essential oils) may improve sleep quality, reduce anxiety, aid a stable mood as well as concentration. Furthermore, lavender aromatherapy may help to reduce agitation in patients with dementia.
Originating from Australia, eucalyptus leaves are identified by their fresh, crisp, clean, and sweet scents. The Aboriginal people of Australia believed in its beneficial healing properties and, therefore, the tree’s leaves have been infused for traditional and natural medicines over the centuries.
Today, eucalyptus is a popular essential oil used in various vapor rubs, rash creams, inhalers, and ointments to soothe physical discomforts. It has also been recognized for the following:
- Facilitating easy breathing
- Enhancing feelings of relaxation
- Creating a refreshing feeling when used in massages
- Soothing nervous tension
Its healing benefits can be attributed to the oil’s anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, decongestant, deodorant, antiseptic, antibacterial, and stimulating qualities.

About Sonoma Lavender
Created by Rebecca and Gary Rosenberg over twenty years ago, Sonoma Lavender started on a farm nestled in the Sonoma Valley (between the Mayacamas Mountains) in the east and the Sonoma Mountains in the west. Ideally situated in Northern California’s wine country, lavender grows rich in fragrance. Rebecca and Gary realized that lavender is truly like magic - it repels, heals, and relaxes.
The business started with 50 pounds of lavender at Rebecca’s and Gary’s kitchen table, where products were carefully created by hand and sold to local shops. As the business grew, the Sonoma Lavender team moved into a nearby farm and then a nearby workshop. The handcrafted product range has expanded to include other fragrances such as eucalyptus, brisk and refreshing OceanAire, and Timber Lake.
Today, the products are still meticulously handcrafted with the care and experience of twenty years. Sold at some of the finest gift shops and spas internationally.
